Extraordinary and very large wooden hibachi 火鉢 (fire bowl) beautifully decorated with maki-e lacquer and some mother-of-pearl inlay-work depicting two rabbits under the moon and the seven herbs of autumn 秋の七草 (aki no nanakusa) . The hibachi has a copper inner bassin. There are some signs of age, the wood has some old restored cracks. But overall in good condition. Please look at the photos for a condition reference. It is a brazier which is either round, cylindrical, or box-shaped, open-topped container, made from or lined with a heatproof material and designed to hold burning charcoal. It is filled with incombustible ash, and charcoal sits in the centre of the ash. Hibachi were used for heating, not for cooking. It heats by radiation, and is too weak to warm a whole room.
