Hilda Trefusis, British 1891-1980 - A North African Street Scene; oil on canvas laid on board, signed lower left 'H Trefusis', 48.5 x 33 cm (ARR) Note: Trefusis was the cousin of Violet Trefusis, the famous lover of Vita Sackville-West. She studied at the Byam Shaw school for two years before serving as a nurse in the Great War. The Studio magazine makes note of her work being selected in a 1911 exhibition as one of the finest on view (No. 52, 1911, pp.163-164). She travelled widely in Europe and Africa and supported herself by exhibiting and painting portrait commissions. She exhibited at the Goupil Gallery in 1925; illustrated a book written by Henry Somers-Cocks; appears to have been commissioned to paint views of the home front, with five such paintings in the IWM Collection; travelled to and painted scenes of Africa between 1949-1950, staying with her brother, the Rev. Dr Francis Trefusis in Northern Rhodesia where he was a missionary; and began an unpublished book around this time titled ‘Painter in the Bush – Letters from Hilda Trefusis in Africa’ (ed. Phyllida Garth). A retrospective exhibition of her work was held at the Burton Art Gallery in April 1996.
