Hilma Af Klint "Self Portrait" Print

[ translate ]

Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish artist and one of the pioneers of abstract art. Born in Stockholm, Sweden, af Klint began her artistic career studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, where she trained as a traditional landscape and portrait painter. However, af Klint's artistic vision began to evolve in the late 19th century when she became involved in spiritualism and theosophy, which had a profound influence on her work. She began experimenting with automatic drawing and other forms of mediumistic communication, believing that she was channeling messages from the spiritual realm.Af Klint's abstract paintings, which she created in the early 20th century, predated those of many of her more well-known contemporaries such as Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich. Her works are characterized by their bold geometric shapes, vibrant colors, and esoteric symbols, which she believed represented spiritual truths and cosmic forces. One of af Klint's most ambitious projects was her series of paintings known as "The Paintings for the Temple," which she worked on in secret for over a decade. These large-scale works were intended to be displayed in a temple-like setting and were created as part of af Klint's exploration of the relationship between art, spirituality, and the divine.Despite her groundbreaking contributions to the development of abstract art, af Klint's work remained largely unknown during her lifetime, as she kept most of her abstract paintings hidden from public view. It was only after her death that her work began to receive the recognition it deserved, and she is now celebrated as one of the most important and innovative artists of the early 20th century. Her work continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the world with its visionary beauty and profound spiritual insight.
