Sculpture by the Japanese artist, Hiro Ando. Robot Cat Pink Pigments projected on resin sculpture Very sought after work. Sold in plexiglass box with LED lighting Certificate of authenticity included Hiro Ando was born in 1973 on the island of Shikoku in Japan. In 1995, Hiro Ando began his career as an illustrator after his graduation at the University of Art Tama in Tokyo. In 2005 he founded, he and Saori Nakamishi founded a studio of artists in Tokyo to manage the creation and promotion of other neo-pop artists who express their own popular culture through their creations. Today the “Crazynoodles” studio consists of a dozen artists. Hiro Ando is a versatile artist. He works with oil on canvas, digital media or video. His technique consists of drawing several sketches before making the painting on canvas. His painting is created and emerges in the streets of Tokyo, at night, and combines many colours and graphics. Hiro paints dark urban landscapes and goldfish all over the surface of the canvas. The marriage of the two subjects makes the whole painting dynamic and violent, with a strange feeling of eternity given by the goldfish reminiscent of ancient Japanese paintings and watercolours. Sculpture is a recent edition to the media used by Ando, who began working on a series of orange, green. . . sculptures inspired by Japanese popular culture. Thus the cat, which is a lucky charm in Japan, like the Maneki-Neko, takes different shapes such as a samurai or a sumo wrestler. The artist translates this theme into a modern style. The shiny and smooth materials, bright colours, brutal but rounded shapes of Hiro Ando’s sculptures take us into the world of manga in which the artist’s generation grew up. Hiro Ando’s art is the meeting of the Meiji era and manga, he is Shogun in a world of Pokemon, he is traditional Japan seen through the eyes of young people: he is certainly part of Japanese neo pop art.
