Historic Gettysburg CDV Views (2)

Pair of two cartes-de-visite (CDV's) showing Federal soldiers posing as Gettysburg battle casualties among the rocks of Devil's Den. Obverses bear the notations “SW Corner Round Top” and “NW Corner Round Top,” with one card bearing the imprint of Hanover, PA photographer "P.S. Weaver." Both show civilians or officers among the rocks of Devil's Den and at least eight uniformed “casualties” with rifles scattered about. These historic photos are considered among the earliest known of Gettysburg's battlefield.

Both views are detailed on pages 184-185 in William Frassanito's “Gettysburg: A Journey in Time” as having been posed around the time of the November 19th, 1863 dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery. Gettysburg photographer William H. Tipton was alleged to have “pirated” these very images from Weaver. A rare and desirable pair of CDV's.
