[History of the Arabs]. Marigny, François Augier.*Histoire des Arabes sous le gouvernement des califes*. Vol. 1–4 (in 4 vols.). Paris 1750. Published by La veuve Estienne & Fils, Desaint & Saillant, Jean-Thomas Herissant, 12º, pp. [4], LIV, [8], 460; [4], 535; [4], 504, [15]; [4], 479, [4], uniform period binding, leather with embossed and gilded labels on the spine, marbled paper on the endpapers, colored page edges.

From the Potocki collection in Chrząstów (stamps bearing the Pilawa coat of arms). One of the most important Enlightenment works devoted to the history of the Arab world, compiled by François Augier de Marigny (c. 1690–1762), a historian and Orientalist. The work was the result of a rapidly growing interest in the 18th century in Islamic culture and Eastern civilization. It covers the history of the Arabs from the death of Muhammad to the fall of Baghdad (1258). The author presents the history of successive caliphs from Abu Bakr to al-Mustasim of the Abbasid dynasty, prefacing the narrative with an extensive introduction devoted to the life of Muhammad and earlier European studies on the Orient. The text contains numerous details on the culture, religion, and customs of Islam, as well as on the Crusades undertaken by Christian Europeans. Period binding: marbled brown leather, with rich embossed and gilded decoration on the spines featuring floral and geometric motifs. The Chrząstów estate (located in the Włoszczowa County) belonged to Count Henryk Potocki. The palace housed a magnificent library of historical works as well as extensive archival collections of the Chrząstów branch of the Potocki family. Some minor creases and discoloration in places; in very good condition.
