LOT 0296

Hohokam Red-on-Buff Storage Jar, Medallion Design, TL'd

[ translate ]

Native American, Hohokam, ca. 900–1150 CE. A broad-shouldered earthenware storage jar rising from a rounded base to an angled shoulder, tapering to a short, everted neck. The buff-colored surface is painted in iron-red slip with a repeating design: encircled medallions quartered by a cross and filled with paired lenticular eyes, alternating with diagonal bands and hatched triangles around the vessel's girth. This red-on-buff decoration is characteristic of Hohokam ceramic tradition, associated with agricultural communities of the Sonoran desert who developed canal systems along the Salt and Gila rivers. The vessel was formed by the paddle-and-anvil technique rather than coiling. Jars of this type served to store grain, water, and seed. Size: 17" W x 11.5" H x 17" D (43.2 cm W x 29.2 cm H x 43.2 cm D).

Provenance: private Phoenix, Arizona, USA collection
