Hokai (2) - Lacquered wood - Pair of two black and gold lacquered circular wooden Hokai boxes - Japan - Meiji period (1868-1912)
Set of two black lacquered circular wooden Hokai boxes, both decorated with leaves in alternating gold lacquer and naiji gold-sprinkled lacquer. With very nicely detailed complete hardware with floral motives, ribbed sides and standing on four feet. Complete with there original green cords and tassels. In good original condition with some signs and marks of use and age on top of the lids. Please see pictures. Hokai boxes are traditionally used in Japan to store and carry shells for Kai-awase game in Edo and Meiji Period. In nicd original condition with some minor signs of age and ware. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
