"Miasma", by Elisabeth Sanxay Holding, published by E.P. Dutton, New York, 1929. First Edition, first printing with "First Edition" stated on the copyright page, no other printings. It is the first print of the first detective mystery story written by Holding.

Hard boards, original publisher's cloth [cloth wear, rounded corners, fading especially spine; damaged spine ends: see photo]; 5.1/8" x 7.3/4"; name on the front endpaper; 230 pages, a little foxing [mostly front endpaper]; a little soiling, a few page corner folds, fair+/ good condition. Elisabeth Sanxay Holding (1889-1955) wrote romantic novels during the 1920s, but, after the stock market crash in 1929, she turned to the more lucrative genre of the detective novel. Miasma was the first detective novel Holding wrote [a macabre mystery in which the author presents a shuddering aspect of Medicine]. Holding's work was well received by critics and peers. From 1929 through 1954, she wrote eighteen detective novels, which sold well and earned her praise for her style and character development. Her series character for these novels was Lieutenant Levy. A few of her novels were made into movie.
