Hollandse school (XX) Naar Cornelis Vreedenburgh (XX) - Een zonnige dag aan de Loosdrechtse Plassen

[ translate ]

A beautiful and impressive painting of a sunny day at the Loosdrechtse Plassen. It is signed with "Copy Cornelis Vreedenburgh" and below it the initials H. S. The painting is painted on panel and dated 1-10-44, although my research shows that Vreedenburgh made the painting in 1933. Nevertheless, the result of this painting is fantastic, especially considering that it was painted during the war years. It is certainly a painting with a story and appeals to the imagination, where one can dream of good times by the water.

The painting shows boats and figures on the quay, as well as a beautiful sailboat in the distance. There are many details to discover, such as grass, sky, and light and shadow effects. It's really well made. This antique painting is framed in a beautifully crafted frame, making it one whole. Unfortunately I have no information about the painter with the initials H. S. , but I do have information about Cornelis Vreedenburgh.

Cornelis Vreedenburgh was mainly self-taught and started his career as a house painter. In his spare time he drew and painted until a royal subsidy gave him the opportunity to devote himself fully to painting in 1904. He appreciated the advice of the impressionist W. B. Tholen, who often took him on his boat on the Kagerplassen and the Loosdrechtse plassen. Vreedenburgh's paintings of meadow and water scenes were popular for their vibrant colors and the way he captured the light and atmosphere of the landscape. In 1917 the painter moved to Laren, where he also started painting many Amsterdam cityscapes.

The condition of the painting is good considering its age. The colors are beautiful and it doesn't look like it needs cleaning. In the middle of the sky a very small piece of paint is missing, which is easy to restore but not really disturbing. The frame shows some signs of wear and here and there are small pieces missing, which have been touched up with gold paint. The white spots in the photo have also been touched up with gold paint, so they do not stand out.

I think this cheerful summer painting is an asset to any interior and is a beautiful ode to the Dutch landscape and the artists.

The dimensions of this painting are 76 cm wide and 56 cm high including frame. The painting itself is 40 by 61 cm.
