Hard boards, leather [some wear]; 4.3/4" x 7.1/2"; "Mary M. Page 1841" is ink written on the front endpaper, 669 pages, some soiling, a few page corner folds, very good condition.

American Bible Society was founded in 1816 by prominent American Protestants. The first President was Elias Boudinot, who had been President of the Continental Congress from 1782 to 1783. John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, was named president in 1821. Edwin Francis Hyde, a former president of the Philharmonic Society of New York, headed up the organization over the years. Francis Scott Key, the writer of the United States' National Anthem, was a Vice President of the organization from 1817 until his death in 1843. American Bible Society's first headquarters were on Nassau Street in Lower Manhattan.

By the 1830s, American Bible Society owned stereotype plates that allowed it to print a quantity of Holy Bibles in several formats, including large family Bibles and pocket version.
