Holy Land / Canaanite Pottery Cow Votive

Ancient Near East, the Levant/Holy Land, Canaanite people, ca. second half of the 1st millennium BCE. A sculpture of a proud cow, probably made to be placed into a home altar or otherwise used votively. It was hand built from a coarse, pale red clay, with a long torso, short, column-like legs that splay out to the sides, and a powerful head and neck. Incised lines create a strap around the nose. The animal's face has a delightful expression, with large eyes, a partially open mouth, and perky ears. An opening on the back was probably used to prevent it from shattering in the kiln but may also have been used to receive offerings. Size: 7.75" W x 5.25" H (19.7 cm x 13.3 cm)

Condition Report: Small loss from side of tail; otherwise in very nice condition with great preservation of form. Surface is weathered with rich deposits.
