Homer Dean Boss was an American painter, printmaker, and influential teacher known for his portraits and Southwestern landscapes. Born in Blandford, Massachusetts, he studied with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri in New York and exhibited in the landmark 1913 Armory Show. He later taught at the Art Students League, where his instruction emphasized anatomy and the human figure. Visits to New Mexico beginning in the 1920s shifted his attention toward Native American portraiture and the region’s dramatic scenery. His work combined a strong foundation in drawing with an increasingly independent approach to color and form.
