Copperplate engraved map (to sight: 505 x 380 mm). Handcoloring, with "Terra Australis," and inset view of native Brazilians; a few stains, minor browning, early annotations in ink, repair to right margin. Matted and framed; not examined out of frame.

A striking map of the Western Hemisphere

Originally engraved by Hondius for the first edition of his Mercator's atlas (1606), this map was meant to appeal to Europeans' curiosity surrounding the New World. "Particularly notable is the native Brazilian scene illustrating the method used to make a local beverage" (Burden). It also depicts a variety of sea monsters, ships, and vignettes of various peoples and ports.
