Horae, use of Rome
Philippe Pigouchet for Simon Vostre, 1498
HORAE, use of Rome, in Latin and French. Paris: Philippe Pigouchet for Simon Vostre, 22 August 1498.

Vellum copy of the first appearance of Pigouchet’s third set of Hours metalcuts. Eight of the cuts in this edition are from set 3: Holy Grail, Tree of Jesse, Annunciation, Adoration of the Shepherds, Death of Uriah, Last Judgment, Holy Trinity, and Deposition; the rest are from set 2. The captioned names of the shepherds and shepherdesses in the Adoration cut (leaf c8v)—Gobin le Gay, Le Beau Roger, Aloris, Alison, Ysauber, and Mahault—suggest contemporary mystery plays as an iconographic source. BMC VIII 119; Bohatta (1924) 648; Brunet V 1582, no. 42; Goff H-394; GW 13314; ISTC ih00394000; Lacombe 59-62; Proctor 8196. See Davies, Murray French, p. 289.

Quarto (182 x 124mm). Printed on vellum. 22 large cuts and 33 small cuts in text of saints and scenes from the life of Christ, all pages within historiated metal-cut borders, initials and space fillers painted in gold on blue or magenta grounds, text faintly ruled in red (light soiling on leaf a1). Early 19th-century brown pigskin gilt, modern red morocco titling piece on spine (joints and extremities lightly worn); modern quarter morocco chemise and slipcase. Provenance: Fielder (bookplate with motto “Faire sans dire”).
