Horatio Gates Signed Pay Receipt, New York Bowery, February 13, 1793
A small printed and manuscript hay weighing receipt, New York Bowery, February 13, 1793, signed "Gates" in the body of the document as the seller, recording the sale of hay "from Mr. Gates, For Mr. Miller" at the New York Bowery, with the weighmaster's totals. The verso bears additional accounting notations. Accompanied by an engraved equestrian portrait of Horatio Gates, painted by Alonzo Chappel, published by Johnson, Fry & Co., New York; dentifying this as a 3.25 x 2.75 inch pay receipt from 1793 filled out and signed "Gates" by Horatio Gates, sold March 26, 2017. General Horatio Gates (1727 to 1806) was the American commander who accepted Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga in 1777, the most consequential American victory of the Revolutionary War. Later discredited by the Conway Cabal and routed at Camden in 1780, Gates retired to New York where he lived out his days as a gentleman farmer. This receipt, signed just six years before his death, documents his quiet post war life. The pairing with the Chappel engraved portrait offers strong display appeal. This item will be accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from One of a Kind Collectibles.
