"The Story of King Arthur and His Knights" is a 1903 novel by the American illustrator and writer Howard Pyle. In these wonderfully illustrated tales, renowned storyteller Howard Pyle carries us back to the enchanting world of King Arthur and his Round Table. The book consists of a large series of episodes in the legend of the mythological king of Britain King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table. It was followed by "The Story of the Champions of the Round Table", "The Story of Sir Launcelot and His Companions", and "The Story of the Grail and the Passing of King Arthur". In Pyle's classic retelling, the legends come alive in unsurpassed vividness. More powerful than any of Merlin's spells, "The Story of King Arthur and His Knights" has delighted generations of readers fascinated by chivalry, magic, and the unforgettable drama of medieval times.

Howard Pyle (March 5, 1853 - November 9, 1911) was an American illustrator and author, primarily of books for young people. He was a native of Wilmington, Delaware, and he spent the last year of his life in Florence, Italy.

His 1883 classic publication "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood" and 1903' King Arthur remains in print. Pyle is also well known for his illustrations of pirates, and is credited with creating the now stereotypical modern image of pirate dress. He published an original novel, "Otto of the Silver Hand", in 1888. He also illustrated historical and adventure stories for periodicals such as "Harper's Weekly" and "St. Nicholas Magazine". His novel "Men of Iron" was made into a movie in 1954.

During 1894, Pyle began teaching illustration at the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry (now Drexel University), and after 1900 he founded his own school of art and illustration named the Howard Pyle School of Illustration Art. The term Brandywine School was later applied to the illustration artists and Wyeth family artists of the Brandywine region by Pitz. Some of his more famous students were N.C. Wyeth, Frank Schoonover, Elenore Abbott, Ethel Franklin Betts, Anna Whelan Betts, Harvey Dunn, Clyde O. DeLand, Philip R. Goodwin, Violet Oakley, Ellen Bernard Thompson Pyle, Olive Rush, Allen Tupper True, and Jessie Willcox Smith.
