Huari Double-Chambered Whistling Monkey Vessel

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Wari (Huari) culture, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. An intriguing figural vessel with a spout rising from one of the canteen-shaped lobes and an amusing simian figure as the other. The monkey has a rotund body with a flat base, a pair of raised arms curved across its chest, and a bulbous head defined by perky ears, circular eyes with painted pupils, a bridged nose, and an open circular mouth. The highly-burnished polychrome surface is painted with red, orange, and brown hues, with stippled and S-shaped motifs on the shoulder of one lobe, and an abstract geometric motif on the top of the slender handle. A clear whistling noise can be heard when air is blown into the upward-projecting spout. Size: 6.75" L x 3.25" W x 5.125" H (17.1 cm x 8.3 cm x 13 cm).
