Huari Polychrome Olla w/ Face Mask & Jaguar

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Huari (Wari) culture, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery olla of an intriguing form with a flat base, a bulbous body with a central carination, a sloped shoulder, and a thin rim overhanging the deep basin. The highly burnished, orange-slipped exterior is accentuated with an expressive face mask bearing a perky nose, a gaping mouth, and wild hemispherical eyes with broad grey and red stripes emanating from the peripheries. The reverse features an abstract jaguar with a sinuous tail, clawed limbs, and a triangular head with huge eyes. Size: 7.4" W x 6.4" H (18.8 cm x 16.3 cm)

Minor abrasions to base, body, and rim, with light fading to original pigmentation, and minor encrustations within basin. Nice traces of original pigment throughout exterior.
