Huari Pottery Vessel and Chancay Pottery Doll

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Wari (Huari) culture, ca. 600 to 1000 CE; Central Coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. A wonderful gathering of two pottery items demonstrating the wide stylistic range of Pre-Columbian Peru. First is a Huari pottery vessel with a rounded base, a globular body decorated with abstract geometric motifs in orange, red, and brown hues, a pair of petite suspension loops, and a goblet-shaped spout. Second is a Chancay terracotta standing figure with thick legs, a broad chest with sinuous arms held over top, and an intriguing visage topped with a striped, three-horned headdress. A lovely ensemble! Lucite display stand for vessel included. Size (Chancay doll): 8.5" H (21.6 cm); size (Huari vessel): 6.375" H (16.2 cm); 7.375" H (18.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private W. B. collection, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, 1930-1962

Condition Report: Figure has repairs to both lateral horns with light adhesive residue along break lines. Vessel has been repaired from several large pieces with some overpainting along break lines. Both items have age-commensurate surface wear, fading to pigmentation, and small chips across the exterior. Light earthen and mineral deposits throughout. Both items have old collection stickers.
