Huastec Panuco Pottery Zoomorphic Jar w/ Parrot Face

Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz region, Panuco River area, Huastec culture, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A hand-built pottery jar of a sizable form with a concave base, an apple-shaped body with a rounded shoulder, a corseted neckline, a bulbous neck, and a flared rim. The zoomorphic vessel exhibits characteristics of an amusing parrot such as two looped wings on the verso that double as suspension hoops, a projecting beak in front of two protruding eyes, and pierced ears that perhaps held additional ornamentation. Black-slipped decorations form the abstract avian figure atop the white ground, with a star-form medallion atop the chest, and a pair of serrated wings on the lateral surfaces. Size: 6.25" W x 9.125" H (15.9 cm x 23.2 cm).
