Artists : Listed 19th/20th Century German Neo- Classical School artist Hubert Heinrich Ritzenhofen (German, 1879-1961) Title of painting : Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Feeding the Poor Medium : Oil on Canvas Signed and dated (19) '32' lower right. Overall measurements including the original gilt frame are 84 cm x 62 cm x 4 cm and the painting itself measures 76 cm x 54 cm The painting and background information of the historical subject. A very fine oil painting on canvas depicting Elizabeth of Hungary feeding the poor. The painting clearly shows the influence of the Pre-Raphaelite movement on the artist whose painted both religiously inspired themes in the more classical style and often using a post-impressionist influence with his landscapes and cityscape themes. The painting is very typical of the artists style and use of tone . Signed and dated lower right. Elizabeth of Hungary, also known as Saint Elizabeth of Thuringia or Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia, was a princess of the Kingdom of Hungary, Landgravine of Thuringia, Germany, and a greatly venerated Catholic saint who was an early member of the Third Order of St. Francis, by which she is honored as its patroness. Elizabeth was married at the age of 14, and widowed at 20. After her husband's death she sent her children away and regained her dowry, using the money to build a hospital where she herself served the sick. She became a symbol of Christian charity after her death at the age of 24 and was canonized on 25 May 1235. Condition report: In very fine condition. The canvas not lined, torn, patched or repaired and just small areas of light craquelure . . Clean, most attractive, well framed and ready to hang, the frame with wear and imperfections as photographed. The artist . Hubert Heinrich Ritzenhofen was a German painter. After his initial training at the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts , Ritzenhofen studied from 1896 to 1907 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Heinrich Lauenstein , Willy Spatz , Eduard Gebhardt and finally as a master student of Claus Meyer. Since 1903 he had his own studio in the academy building. In 1904 he lived at Dammstrasse 8. From 1926 to 1961 he was a member of the Düsseldorf artists' association Malkasten . Ritzenhofen stayed in Düsseldorf, where he married Helena Petronella (* 1894) , a daughter of the Düsseldorf sculptor Adrian Carnas (1862-1948) , who was born in 's-Hertogenbosch . He worked as a landscape , marine , genre and portrait painter and went on study trips to the Netherlands , Belgium and France . He mainly chose motifs from Düsseldorf and the surrounding area. His oil painting White Sunday in St. Lambertus is on permanent loan from the Ritzenhofen family in the Düsseldorf City Museum . His son Walter Ritzenhofen studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Wilhelm Schmurr and also became a painter. We will issue a Certificate of Authenticity with this painting.
