Description

From a sketchbook with studies and compositional sketches made by Hubert Robert in Rome between 1763 and 1764. The type of fountain depicted here obviously goes back to Bernini’s decorative fountain in Piazza Barberini and, with its two sea gods on whose shoulders rests a gigantic, water-filled mussel shell, is more reminiscent of the structure of the Fontana dei Tritoni by Francesco Carlo Bizzaccheri in Piazza della Bocca della Verità. In the background is an aqueduct, through which the fountain was probably fed. – A barely noticeable diagonal crease at the bottom right. The lower corners rounded. Paper somewhat thinned along the margins. The sheet edges with tiny losses. In fine condition.
