Hubert Vos (1855-1935)
A still life with Chinese objects. Signed and dated '23 lower right. Provenance: Hirsch & Adler Galleries, New York, inv.no. APG 13868D.03 (label verso); Christie's Amsterdam, 19 January 1999, lot 227. Hubert Vos was a Dutch-American painter who mostly became famous for his portraits. At the end of the 19th century he helped with the fouding of the Society of British Portrait Painters in England, after which he emigrated to the US in 1892. He subsequently travelled across the globe to paint in places such as Hawaii, Korea, The Dutch Indies and China, where he painted the portrait of the last Empress Dowager of China in 1906.
