Additional Information: RARE SCARAB BEETLE & AMETHYST BROOCH from the Victorian Darwin Era has 9 florescent lacquered Scarab Beet;es mounted on a brooch of 18 Karat (tested) yellow gold with a large Amethyst stone mounted in the center. Brooch has a 'C' clasp closure consistent with that time frame and measures 60mm x 50mm (2-1/4" x 2"). The Amethyst measures 25mm x 20mm (1" x 3/4"). Safety chain with pin at the top that can be unhooked enabling it to be worn as a necklace. There is also a hook on the opposite side for hanging a locket/ladies watch. This is a magnificent brooch with intricate and precise workmanship in pristine condition. Rarely do you find authentic scarab jewelry of this quality in this condition.; The Victorian craze for the bazar and the exotic was sparked by Charles Darwin in the 1800s. Rare insects/bugs were collected from exotic places and incorporated into jewelry. The fascination with Scarabs comes from the early Egyptians as it was thought the scarab pushed the sun and moon around the earth bringing day and night thus bringing good luck and fortune.
