Huge Early 20th C. African Mambila Iron Hoe Currency

Central Africa, Cameroon, Mambila peoples, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A large forged-iron currency piece in the shape of a round-edged hoe with a flat body, one projecting shoulder fin, and a slender tang. Currency pieces like this example are used in exchange for goods and services, but they are also an important component of the ceremonial marriage dowry payment. Size: 18.5" W x 24.5" H (47 cm x 62.2 cm)

Provenance: private J.H. collection, Beaverton, Oregon, USA, acquired in December 2010; ex-private New York, New York, USA collection
