After meeting Hugh Hefner on Playboy's late-night special Playboy After Dark, then UCLA student Benton and Hefner began a relationship that lasted years and ultimately made Benton the center of the Playboy Enterprise. Throughout her Playboy career, Benton appeared on the cover of four magazine issues.

Playboy Records was a Los Angeles-based record label, part of Playboy Enterprises, that later released Benton's debut album Barbi Benton in 1975.
