Hugo von Habermann was a German painter and draftsman, but he originally studied law. He served in the army during the Franco-Prussian War, and during his service he was put in charge of supervising artists who painted portraits of prisoners of war in Ingolstadt. There he left law altogether and began to devote himself to painting. He was particularly successful in portraiture and was awarded the title of Royal Bavarian Professor.
