A Stoneware Tankard

Annaberg, 2nd half of the 17th Century

Stoneware with brown slip glaze, embellished in enamels and gilding. Pewter cover and base, inscribed "P. Schiller, and dated 1777. Tapering cylindrical form with ear-shaped handle. The body moulded with panels of diamond-pattern ground and relief overlays, the front with a gentleman on horseback flanked on both sides by a reclining deer, the back with a huntsman and a bear attacked by hunting dog. Some losses to the surface colour. Height 18 cm.
