A fantastic contract between the "Sam Jaffe Agency, Artist's Manager and Agency, 8553 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, Ca", and Humphrey Bogart, for the duration of three years commencing January 10, 1940. These years launched Bogart's career. His breakthrough from supporting roles to stardom came with High Sierra (1941, his last gangster role) and The Maltese Falcon (1941), considered one of the first great noir classic films. Bogart's private detectives, Sam Spade (in The Maltese Falcon) and his later Phillip Marlowe (in 1946's The Big Sleep), became the models for detectives in other film noir. His most significant romantic lead role was with Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca (1942). Of additional interest, Jaffe had only opened his own Agency in 1935. One of the myriad anecdotes from Jaffe's serial career stemmed from working with a favorite client, Bogart. The actor’s then-wife, Mayo Methot, had threatened to kill the actor if he left her. That was 1942, and Jaffe and agent Mary Baker had negotiated a major contract for Bogart with Warner Bros. But suddenly losing their star, the studio feared, might prove costly to production. So Jaffe took out an insurance policy that would pay Warner Bros. $100,000 if Bogart got shot during filming. He lived, and the film, “Casablanca,” became a classic.
