Property from a Private Collector
Baldassare Franceschini, called Il Volterrano
Volterra 1611 - 1689 Florence
Hylas with a vase

oil on canvas, an oval
canvas: 41 by 34 in.; 104.1 by 86.4 cm.
framed: 65 by 53½ in.; 165.1 by 135.9 cm.

Condition Report:
The canvas is lined and is taut and stable on its oval-shaped stretcher. The image reads well with strong contrast and bold colors retained in the blue robes and gold vase. A fine pattern of craquelure is visible throughout but not distracting. No repairs or retouching are obvious to the naked eye. Under UV inspection, retouching is scattered throughout: an oval-shaped repair in the center right, a few small repairs in the bottom left shadow, concentrated retouching above the figure’s head, over his proper right shoulder, on his forehead and throat, on his wrist, and on his proper left sleeve. No retouching is visible in the gold vase. The painting has been well restored and can hang in its present condition. Offered in an elaborate rectangular frame of ebonized wood and giltwood with putti at each corner and a gilt inner oval lining.
