IFA F8 TWO-DOOR SEDAN - History:
Produced from 1949 to 1955, the IFA F8 was one of the first cars manufactured in East Germany after World War II. However, its design predates the war, as it was directly derived from the DKW F8, launched by Auto Union in 1939 and produced until 1942.
After the war, the former Audi plant in Zwickau, located in the Soviet occupation zone, gradually resumed operations. The F8 reappeared under the name DKW-IFA F8, before mass production of the IFA F8 began in 1949. It retained most of the design of the pre-war DKW.
The F8 stood out in particular for its front-wheel drive—a solution DKW had been using since the 1930s—as well as its 692 cm³ water-cooled two-stroke twin-cylinder engine, producing approximately 20 ch, paired with a three-speed manual transmission. Its top speed was around 85 km/h.
Offered in several body styles, including a two-door sedan, station wagon, and convertible, the F8 retained a construction characteristic of its era, notably featuring a wooden frame for part of the body.
Despite the introduction of technically more modern models such as the IFA F9, the F8 remained in production until 1955. Approximately 26,000 units were produced during the IFA era, before the model was replaced by the AWZ P70.
Description:
This IFA F8 is in a state of particularly advanced deterioration and now represents a major project requiring a complete restoration.
The body structure is severely deteriorated. Several parts of the wooden frame are visibly damaged or even disintegrated, particularly around the doors, pillars, roof, and side panels. The body also shows significant corrosion, with various holes and distortions. Straps have been installed around the body to hold certain components in place.
The fabric-covered roof is severely deteriorated and shows numerous areas where the fabric has come loose and tears. The trim and seals also need to be replaced.
The bumpers, hubcaps, trim strips, headlights, and several original accessories are still present. The front retains its large, distinctive vertical grille bearing the IFA monogram. An external spare tire is also mounted at the rear.
The dashboard retains its analog gauges and the gear selector mounted on the dashboard. The odometer reads approximately 33,833 km, a figure that is naturally not guaranteed given the vehicle’s condition and age.
The engine compartment appears relatively complete. It contains the IFA/DKW two-stroke twin-cylinder engine, its cooling system, the radiator, the fuel tank, various electrical components, and an old battery.
The visible serial number on the mechanical assembly is: 01-117536
This IFA F8 is primarily a restoration project that is expected to be extensive, involving the body, the wooden frame, the interior, and the mechanical components.
