A MONUMENTAL AND FINE ICON OF CHRIST OF SMOLENSK FROM A CHURCH ICONOSTASIS Central Russian, Moscow, 19th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. The background gilded. Christ is depicted full-length and frontally on the vertical central axis. In his veiled left hand he holds the open Gospel, while his right hand is raised in blessing. At head level he is flanked by two angels holding the Instruments of the Passion. The red cushion on which he stands rests on the ground. The garments richly highlighted with gold. At his feet kneel the monastic saints Sergius of Radonezh and Saint Varlaam. Minor retouching. 90.5 x 72.5 cm.
