IMPERIAL RUSSIAN SIGNED PHOTO GRAND DUKE MIKHAIL. Comprising a large and attractive mounted platinum print of the Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich Romanov in uniform. The lower margin of photograph boldly signed Mikhail as well as inscribed Gatchina and further dated December 24, 1917. The lower margin of mount further personalized with the inscription "Darling Akalaevich." The lower left corner of print with name of photographer Bendel and the lower right mount with partial blind stamp of photographer. The image 9 inches x 5.75 inches (23 x 14.5 cm), the mount 12.25 inches x 9 inches (31 x 23 cm) contained in a later glazed wood frame.

Provenance:
ARTCO, Sacramento, California, where acquired by the consignor in 1988.

Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich of Russia (1878-1918) was the youngest son and fifth child of Emperor Alexander III of Russia and youngest brother of Nicholas II. Only a mere seven months after the offered lot was signed by the Grand Duke, Mikhail became the first of the Romanovs to be murdered by the Bolsheviks when he was killed outside Perm in the early morning hours of June 13, 1918.
