[ translate ]

IMPORTANT PRESSED SANDWICH STAR / TRIPLE DOLPHIN COMPOTE, bright canary yellow, wide bowl with a 26-petal rim, raised on a triple-dolphin standard and a domed circular foot with rings pressed on the underside, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1850-1870. 9 5/8" H, 11 3/4" D rim, 5 1/4" D foot.
Outstanding and impressive appearance, however, the bowl has a crack off the rim and into the center, along with the normal chipping under the rim petals.
Literature: Parallels Barlow/Kaiser - The Glass Industry in Sandwich, Vol. I, p. 163, fig. 1176. Parallels Lee - EAPG, pl. 14A.
Provenance: From the collection of the late Alexander Hierholzer (Holt) and Harry Saunders, Philadelphia, PA.
Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates, 5/22/10, lot 34.
Ex-collection of Larry & Sandy Mackle (retains collection label).
Arman's Absentee Auctions, 7/22/87, lot 235.
Ex-collection of Richard "Dick" Adams, RFD Antiques.
Discovered in a Reading, PA private residence in 1970.
Catalogue Note: Only a few colorless examples of this dolphin-base compote are known to exist, and this canary example seems to be unique. Ruth Webb Lee was the first author to record the form in the 1940s, at which time it was the only known example. A colorless specimen from the Wakefield collection was sold at Bourne's in 1974 and catalogued as "one of two known to exist, and both examples are cracked." The Bourne catalogue further speculated, "It has been determined that it was impossible to make this compote without a crack because of its weight." Barlow and Kaiser published the colorless specimen from the Sandwich Glass Museum in 1993 and commented that "Several have been recorded."
Despite its condition issues, this compote remains one of the most important examples of early American glass known.
Condition Report: Outstanding and impressive appearance, however, the bowl has a crack off the rim and into the center, along with the normal chipping under the rim petals.
