INCREDIBLY RARE First Model Meiji Period Imperial Japanese Navy Sword

[ translate ]

The word rare is very often overused however there are very few extant examples of the first pattern 1870's Imperial Japanese Navy Meiji Period Officers sword irregardless of condition. While hand forged these blades were universally, not differently tempered so they do not have a temper line. The blades of these swords were forged in the very attractive and desirable shape known as kanmuriotoshi. Being they were all hand made signatures are found on the ricasso of this style sword. This one is signed Norinao. Each existing sword of this type have numbered tangs that match the number engraved upon their guards as does this one. The condition of this blade is very good however as is part of its history the veteran who brought it home decided to permanently mark it with his name, the location where he obtained it, along with the date he acquired it in electric pencil. It is marked, ""Wm Cowie NAGOYA 46"". The scabbard has all it's original metal fittings but shows much leather marring and loss. Given the rarity of this model sword it will still make a very welcome center piece of any beginning or advanced collection. Full length 36.5 inches, blade length 29 inches.
