In Hinduism, the river Ganges is personified in the form of a goddess: Maa Ganga (mother Ganges) or Ganga Devi (goddess Ganges) . Ganga corresponds to the Sanskrit word "gáṅgā", which means "going, going" or fast-moving. One version of mythology states that it was the god Brahma who created the river Ganges. It was formed from the sweat collected from the foot of the god Vishnu. Another version tells that King Sagar had 60,000 sons and one day while performing a ritual, the god Indra stole his horse, so the king ordered all his sons to go out and look for him. The search ends in the underworld, where they find him next to a penitent sage who, on opening his eyes, saw Sagar's sons and set them all on fire. The souls of these sons were left to wander as ghosts. A descendant of King Sagar asked the god Brahma to allow the goddess Ganga to descend and touch the ashes of Sagar's sons with her purifying waters so that they could ascend to heaven. Another legend says that the Ganges, whose waters flowed through the sky, descended to earth to ease the drought in India after they had been deprived of water. The drought came because the great sage Agastya, in order to protect them from the demons that tormented them, decided to drink the entire ocean and thus put an end to these demons. With the descent of the Ganges, besides calming the drought, all the inhabitants were purified of their sins. Although there are different versions of the way in which the goddess Ganga descends to the earth to form the river Ganges. The purpose of this deity is to purify souls, hence for Hindu culture it is recognised for its purifying waters as the waters of death and life.
