Indian pierced iron elephant goad or ankus. These hooks are used by the mahout (the keepers, trainers, and drivers of elephants) to control elephants. Thick double-edged point, with openwork center panel and reinforced thickened tip. To one side protrudes a recurved hook, also with reinforced thickened tip. The center panel is elaborately pierced and engraved. The tapering ribbed steel handle is divided into sections. Pommel consists of a brass butt piece in the shape of a stylized elephant.
