Ingrid Atterberg, born 11 May 1920 in Härnösand and deceased 27 March 2008 in Uppsala, was a prominent Swedish ceramist and designer. She had a significant impact on the modernist art movement in Sweden and became known primarily for her work in the world of ceramics.
After studying ceramics at Släjdföreningen's school in Gothenburg, Ingrid opened her own pottery workshop in the city. In 1944 she began working at Upsala-Ekeby AB, where she quickly became a prominent artist. She introduced technical innovations such as manganese clay and chamotte, and she experimented with glazes and clay types. Her work led to the development of sinterware, a form of stoneware that could be made at lower costs due to lower burning temperatures.
During her time at Upsala-Ekeby, Ingrid Atterberg created over 100 different pottery series. She also worked for other pottery factories such as Karlskrona and Gefle Porcelain Factories and had assignments in Tuscany and Alsterfors glassworks.
In 1954 she married architect Viking Göransson. After leaving Upsala-Ekeby in 1963, she opened her own ceramics workshop in Uppsala in 1969. There she focused on creating turned earthenware with intense glazes in strong colors, and she used sophisticated crackelyr patterns that appeared after multiple firings.
Ingrid Atterberg was also active in artists' organizations and played a role in improving the conditions for industrial designers. She co-founded the Arts and Crafts and Industrial Designers of Sweden (KIF) and sat on its board of directors.
Her artistic work included not only ceramics but also ceramic works for public places, including tiled walls and embellishments. Ingrid Atterberg had several exhibitions in Sweden and abroad and received gold medals for her works in Italy.
