INGRID BERGMAN AND ROBERT MONTGOMERY
During the filming of W.S. Van Dyke’s MGM film noir *Rage in Heaven* (La Proie du mort), 1941.
Photo by Clarence S. Bull, vintage card stock print, stamped by the photographer and captioned on the back.
20.4 x 25.2 cm, including white borders.

Note: Ingrid Bergman plays Stella Bergen, a young secretary who marries Philip Monrell, the heir to a steel mill, portrayed by Robert Montgomery. Behind his apparent fragility, Philip reveals pathological jealousy and growing paranoia, particularly toward his former classmate Ward Andrews, played by George Sanders. The marriage then becomes a controlling relationship, before Philip devises a scheme to frame his rival for his own murder. Adapted from the novel by James Hilton, this psychological drama with film-noir undertones was officially directed by W. S. Van Dyke, who replaced Robert B. Sinclair during production; Richard Thorpe subsequently directed some reshoots. Ingrid Bergman had been loaned to MGM by David O. Selznick’s company.
