INVASION OF EUROPE: U.S. ARMY SERVICE COLOR.
[USA: c.1944]
American 48-Star parade flag, 750 x 1110 mm, fringed with gold tassels. Seam at the hoist slightly loose.
Provenance: Recovered in 1944 in the Argentan area of France; sold in a brocante sale at Villedieu les Bailleul in July 1986.

A US Army service color with the gold tasseled edges, retrieved after the US Forces passed through the Argentan area, as they closed in on the Falaise Gap. This flag may well have been part of General Gaffey's baggage, who was in command of the 2nd French Armored Division west of Argentan, and presumed to have been carried for use at a future victory parade, such as, the capture of Paris.
