A battle-damaged American 48 Star linen Flag. 1390 x 1600 mm (max). The flag with faint stencil marks on each side of the hoist, "INF BATT" visible. The flag with grommets removed and halyards applied, stained and discolored, very worn and damaged, blue faded to grey, the fly blown out, many shrapnel holes and damages.
A fine damaged American battle flag, probably used over a HQ or flown at the top of the Church Tower, so as to avoid friendly fire strafing and bombing from Allied air forces, and likely flown over many villages and towns in Normandy, Belgium and Germany, as the US Forces moved across Europe from June 1944 to May 1945.
