ITALY “Classical Sculpture of a Crouching Roman Woman” Late 19th century. White bisque porcelain, matte surface with a fine, silky texture. Unmarked. The unglazed underside features a characteristic central air or firing hole from the manufacturing process; height: approx. 30 cm. Set on a simple, oval plinth, the figure of a crouching young woman is composed to be viewed from all angles in the classical antique style. The sculpture captures an intimate moment of grooming: her arms are gracefully raised, while the lady, in complete concentration, fastens a teardrop-shaped earring to her left earlobe. The delicate modeling is particularly evident in the contrast between the soft, exposed skin and the ornate accessories: her wavy hair is pinned up in an elegant bun, while a relief-decorated pearl necklace and filigree bracelets adorn her décolletage and wrists. The off-the-shoulder, high-waisted Empire-style gown falls in deep, masterfully sculpted folds over her knees, creating a charming interplay of light and shadow in the matte bisque porcelain. In excellent, undamaged condition. No visible chips or restorations. The matte surface shows only minimal traces of dust—typical for its age—in the deep folds of the gown, which further emphasize the sculptural quality of the work.
