Iatmul population, Sepik River, Papua New Guinea.
Ritual dagger called Payback dagger made of a terracotta head topped with cassowary feathers, decorated with shells, mollusc shells and organic matter.
The blade, which is missing here but whose remains can be seen at the base of the neck, was made from human or cassowary bone (femur).
(crack on the right ear, missing nose).
Total height including feathers: 40 cm; height of mask alone: 16 cm; width: 17 cm.
