single volume, 364 leaves, lacking a few leaves from the end, single and double column, 20 lines of black nastaliq with some important words and overlining in red, gilt polychrome heading opening the text, numerous diagrams and tables in the text, leaves ruled in red, green and gilt, catch-words, some contemporary marginalia to border, some light water-staining to outer extremities of leaves, rarely affecting text, 233 by 135 mm.; contemporary black morocco, upper cover with decoupé medallions coloured in green, ruled in blind, early paper label to spine, extremities slightly rubbed, else good condition

This cosmographical work is the magnum opus of Ibn Abu Bakr bin Ahmad al-Mustafi Qazvini (d. 1239). It focuses on the geography of Persia and the neighbouring regions. The present copy is bound in a fine contemporary stamped Safavid binding with decoupé leather and filigree work, comparable to Haldane's examples 80 and 85 (Islamic Bookbindings, 1983), with influences of Turkish binding styles without a flap.
