Antique Russian icon ‘Birth of Mother of God’, around 1800. Excellently painted, antique icon with representation of the "Birth of the Mother of God". Iconography and sources for this presentation are the apocryphal writings as well as the gospel of the birth of Mary, the proto-gospel of James, chapter V, 2 et sequ. and the pseudo-gospel of Matthew. The motif "Birth of Mother of God" was executed in the old tradition of Russian fine painting and was painted in excellent quality. The nature of the painting suggests that the icon was made in a painting workshop located in central Russia, painted in egg tempera on wood and chalk panel and finely gilded.
