Rare and large Greek icon from the 19th century. The Christ on the cross in the centre of the composition, whose curved body is largely inspired by the stylistic models of Cretan icons of the 15th-16th century, is surrounded by holy figures (including an oriental figure, Sultan? on the right) , Christ and God the Father in the clouds in the upper register, and holy warriors in the lower register fighting the forces of evil. This type of composition with a central scene framed by minor scenes is rare in Greek icon art and is clearly inspired here by Russian festival icons where this composition is common.
