Icon - John the Baptist - Wood

Large, antique Russian icon "St. John the Baptist" from the 19th century (around 1880) . Hand-painted with egg tempera paints on a wooden panel with chalk ground.

Typical method of icon making in the 18th and 19th centuries in Tsarist Russia. The motif is widespread and very popular in the Orthodox Church.

This is an Old Believer icon. The painting is quite masterful and detailed. Perfectly coordinated color contrasts and successful shading. The painting contains very authentic craquelures (see photos) .

Partial restorations are present (see photos) . The face of the saint is particularly expressive and striking (see photos) . The saint is labeled. The labels are easy to read.

Both cross sponkas are missing on the back. Stable and solid wooden panel. The wooden panel is slightly curved. The icon is in good condition with typical signs of age-related wear (see photos) .
