Nicholas of Myra (ancient Greek Νικόλαος Μυριώτης Nikólaos Myriṓtēs; * between 270 and 286 in Patara; † December 6, 326, 345, 351 or 365[1]) is one of the most famous saints of the Eastern Churches and the Latin Church. His feast day, December 6th, is celebrated throughout Christianity and is associated with numerous customs.
According to historical traditions, the Bishop of Myra is said to have always mercifully and generously distributed gifts to the poor. This exemplary behavior is commemorated every year through the custom in December. This makes Santa Claus the most important messenger of the pre-Christmas season.

This icon is labelled and is in its original condition from that time with normal signs of wear and tear and blemishes due to age, such as paint flaking, scratches, abrasion, woodworm holes and dirt. A very old tempera painting painted by an artist on chalk ground and old wood.
