Icon - St. Demetrios of Thessaloniki with Pop - Wood

Rare Greek icon of the 19th century. This icon shows Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki on a horse, killing a pagan who has fallen to the ground with a lance.
It is said that Demetrios was stabbed to death in prison under Emperor Maximianus at the beginning of the 4th century - at a time when Christians were being persecuted - because he had encouraged Christians in their faith. His grave was an important place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. To this day, in the days before his feast, oil that is said to have healing powers flows from the grave. The depiction of Saint Demetrios on this holy image is strongly reminiscent of the dragon-slayer images and sculptures of Saint George. According to legend, Demetrios was a brother of George.
What makes this icon particularly rare is that, in contrast to the traditional depiction, it depicts a kind of priest who also rides the horse.
Technique: Tempera and gold on wood panel. Slightly damaged.
